Computer Glasses — Who Needs Them, How They Work and How to Choose
Written by MODI
Computer glasses — better known as screen or blue-light glasses — are lenses that filter the blue light coming from monitors and make long hours at a screen easier on your eyes. If you spend 6–8 hours a day in front of a computer, this guide will help you decide whether you need a pair and how to choose the right one.

What computer glasses actually do
Screens emit more blue light than ordinary indoor lighting. An honest answer first: a blue-light lens is not magic — screen fatigue is also caused by blinking less and by dry eyes. But it noticeably reduces the discomfort of a bright screen, and in the evening less blue light also supports your sleep rhythm. We break down the science here: what blue-light glasses really do.
The filter, in numbers
Vague claims like "blocks blue light" mean nothing without a range. The CR39 Blue-Cut lens BARNER uses states its figures:
- 100% of blue light blocked up to 410 nm — the short, high-energy end
- 45% reduction across 410–450 nm
- No yellow cast strong enough to shift colours — which matters if you work in design
When you compare brands, ask for exactly this: a percentage and a nanometre range. If a seller cannot give you both, there is nothing to compare.
Who benefits most
- Office workers who spend most of the day at a monitor
- Developers, designers, accountants — anyone whose work means long, focused screen time
- People who work late into the evening — blue light delays sleep (blue light and sleep)
- Students during exam season
Which frame suits which face
You will wear these eight hours a day, so fit matters more than looks. The rule opticians use is contrast: an angular frame balances a round face, a rounder frame softens an angular one.
| Face shape | Frame that works | BARNER models |
|---|---|---|
| Round | Rectangular, defined corners | Dalston, Osterbro, Sodermalm |
| Square, angular | Round or oval, softer lines | Andy, Charles, Le Marais |
| Oval | Most shapes work | Brad, Holly, Pascal |
| Narrow, small features | A smaller frame — a wide one overwhelms | Chamberí, Astoria |

How to choose glasses for computer work
- The filter. A quality lens cuts a noticeable share of blue light without distorting colours — especially important for design work.
- Dioptres. A monitor sits 60–70 cm away. If you already use reading glasses, a half-step weaker lens is usually more comfortable for the screen than your reading dioptre (how to choose your dioptre).
- Weight and comfort. You will wear them all day — a TR-90 frame weighs about 15 g.
- Fitting. Trying on is free at any MODI store.
If you already wear a prescription
You do not need a second pair. Any BARNER frame can be fitted with prescription lenses, and the blue-light filter goes onto those same lenses — one pair that corrects your vision and filters the screen.
Lenses are made to order to your prescription. Bring the prescription to any store, or have your eyes checked first and come with the result. If you want lenses that darken outdoors as well, that is the photochromic option.
Three habits that help as much as glasses
The 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes look about 6 metres away for 20 seconds), keep the screen 60–70 cm from your eyes and slightly below eye level, and match screen brightness to the room. More here: 7 simple rules against eye fatigue at the computer.

Frequently asked questions
Do computer glasses really work?
They noticeably reduce the discomfort of a bright screen, and in the evening less blue light supports your sleep rhythm. They do not fix dryness caused by blinking less — that needs breaks and the 20-20-20 rule.
Can computer glasses be made with my prescription?
Yes. At MODI any BARNER frame can be fitted with prescription lenses, and a blue-light filter can be added to them.
What dioptre should I use at a monitor?
A monitor sits 60–70 cm away — further than a book. If you already use reading glasses, a half-step weaker lens is usually more comfortable for screen work.
How much blue light does the lens actually block?
The CR39 Blue-Cut lens blocks 100% of blue light up to 410 nm and reduces it by about 45% across the 410–450 nm range. When comparing brands, ask for both a percentage and a nanometre range — a claim without those two numbers cannot be compared.
How much do computer glasses cost in Georgia?
BARNER screen glasses start at 195 GEL at MODI, with delivery across Georgia and free fitting in all four stores.
Can a company order these for its employees?
Yes. Corporate orders get a 15% discount, are paid by invoice, and can mix models and sizes in one order, including prescription and non-prescription lenses.
Do children need computer glasses?
Screen-time limits and outdoor play matter most. An evening blue-light filter can support a child's sleep rhythm; for any concern about a child's vision, see an ophthalmologist.
