Eye Fatigue at the Computer: 7 Simple Rules
Written by MODI
Dry eyes, blurry vision, a headache at the end of the workday — these are the classic symptoms of working at a computer. Here are 7 rules you can start applying today:
1. The 20-20-20 rule
Every 20 minutes, look at a distant object (about 6 meters away) for 20 seconds. This gives your focusing muscles a rest.
2. Blink
When working at a screen, we blink far less than usual — that's exactly why our eyes dry out. Consciously blinking more often genuinely helps.
3. Position your screen correctly
The screen should be at arm's length (50–70 cm) and slightly below eye level.
4. Lighting and glare
Direct light from a window shouldn't fall on the screen — glare puts extra strain on your eyes.
5. Text size
If you're squinting to read text, increase the font size — it's a free and instant fix.
6. Breaks
At least once an hour, step away from the screen for 5 minutes — take a walk, drink some water, do a stretch.
7. Screen glasses
An anti-reflective lens with a blue-light filter adds comfort for many people — especially when working in the evening. Combined with the rules above, it creates well-rounded protection.
