"Chameleon" Glasses — What Photochromic Lenses Are and Who They're For
Written by MODI
"Chameleon" — that's the popular name for glasses that darken outdoors and turn clear again indoors. In optics, this technology is called a photochromic lens. One pair that works as "two pairs" throughout the day — it sounds ideal, but it has its strengths and weaknesses, and you should know them before you buy.
How they work
A photochromic lens contains special molecules that react to ultraviolet (UV) rays. When you step outside, UV rays "activate" the molecules and the lens darkens within a few minutes. When you go back indoors, the UV disappears — and the lens gradually returns to its clear state.

The lens darkens in roughly 30–60 seconds, and returns to full clarity in 2–5 minutes. In cold weather the darkening is more intense; in heat — slightly weaker.
Strengths
One pair instead of two. You don't need to carry and constantly swap two pairs — especially convenient for people who wear prescription lenses.
UV protection at all times. A photochromic lens blocks UV rays in both its dark and clear states.
Comfort in changing light. From morning to evening, the lens adapts to the light by itself — you don't have to think about a thing.
Limitations — stated honestly
They darken less in the car. Car glass blocks most UV rays — so behind the wheel, a "chameleon" lens can't fully darken. For drivers, classic polarized sunglasses are the better choice.
The transition isn't instant. When you walk indoors, the lens needs a few minutes to return to clear.
Standard photochromic lenses aren't polarized. For cutting glare (water, road, snow), polarized lenses are a separate category.
Chameleon or classic sunglasses — which should you choose
| Situation | Better choice |
|---|---|
| Most of your day is spent moving between indoors and outdoors | Chameleon |
| You wear prescription lenses | Chameleon |
| You drive a lot | Polarized sunglasses |
| Sea, mountains, snow — intense sun | Polarized sunglasses |
| You love one particular style, all the time | Classic sunglasses |
What it costs and how ordering works
Photochromic lenses are made to order — they are not something you take off a shelf. At MODI:
- Photochromic prescription lenses — 135₾ per pair, fitted into a BARNER frame of your choice
- Frames from 195₾, and any BARNER frame can take them
- The lenses are cut to your prescription by our optical partner in Georgia — no waiting on an import
Bring your prescription to any store, or have your eyes tested first and come with the result. The consultant will confirm the exact lead time for your prescription on the spot — a stronger correction takes a little longer than a light one.
What to ask for when you order
- Your prescription — sphere, cylinder and axis for each eye, plus pupillary distance if it is on the sheet
- Whether you want an anti-reflective coating — worth it on a photochromic lens, because it reduces reflections while the lens is still clear indoors
- The frame first, lens second. Choose the frame you will actually wear; the lens is fitted to it, not the other way round

Frequently asked questions
How long does a photochromic lens take to darken and to clear again?
It darkens in roughly 30-60 seconds and returns to full clarity in 2-5 minutes. In cold weather the darkening is more intense; in heat it is slightly weaker.
How much do photochromic lenses cost in Georgia?
At MODI, photochromic prescription lenses cost 135 GEL per pair, fitted into a BARNER frame. Frames start at 195 GEL, and any BARNER frame can take them.
Do chameleon glasses work in the car?
Not fully. Car glass blocks most UV rays and a photochromic lens reacts to UV, so behind the wheel it stays lighter than it would outdoors. Drivers are better served by polarized sunglasses.
Are photochromic lenses polarized?
Standard photochromic lenses are not polarized. If your main goal is cutting glare from water, road or snow, polarized lenses are a separate category.
Can chameleon lenses be made with my prescription?
Yes. At MODI photochromic lenses are ordered individually, made to your prescription and set into a BARNER frame.
Do photochromic lenses still protect from UV when they are clear?
Yes. The lens blocks UV rays in both its dark and its clear state, so the protection does not stop the moment you step indoors.
