Blue light (screen) glasses filter the short-wavelength light coming from digital screens. Many wearers say they feel more comfortable during long working sessions — although, as we explain below, research has not yet confirmed a medical effect. What is blue light
Blue light is the short-wavelength part of the visible spectrum, roughly 380-500 nanometers. Its main source is not your screen but the sun — sunlight emits far more of the blue spectrum than any monitor does.
Bright screen light in the evening genuinely can affect melatonin production. But that has more to do with brightness and timing than with the blue part of the spectrum alone.
What the research says
In 2023, Cochrane — an authoritative organization for evidence in medicine — published a review of 17 clinical trials. The conclusion: lenses with a blue-light filter probably make no meaningful difference to eye strain, retinal health, or sleep quality.

What actually works
- The 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at a distant object for 20 seconds
- Blink consciously — at the screen, your blink rate roughly halves
- Match your screen brightness to the lighting in the room
- Switch screens off 1-2 hours before bed — for your sleep, this matters far more
- Visit an ophthalmologist once a year
Who they make sense for
If you spend 6+ hours a day at a screen and want extra comfort; if you need glasses anyway and the filter comes as a free add-on; or if you simply like the style. If you spend 1-2 hours a day at a screen and have no discomfort — you don't need them.
