Blue Light Glasses: What They Actually Do and Who Needs Them

How many hours a day do you spend in front of a screen? For the average office worker it's 8-10 hours — and by evening your eyes feel heavy, your head aches, and the letters on the screen start to blur.

In response to this problem, blue light glasses (blue-cut, screen glasses) appeared on the market. But what do they actually do — and are they worth it? In this article we'll answer honestly, based on research.

What is blue light

Visible light is a spectrum — from red to violet. Blue light is its short-wavelength part, roughly 380-500 nanometers.

Here's what people often forget: the main source of blue light is not your screen — it's the sun. Sunlight emits far more of the blue spectrum than any monitor or phone. This context matters when we hear marketing promises.

What a blue-cut lens technically does

A blue-cut lens has a special coating, or a filter built into the lens material itself, that partially or fully blocks the blue part of the spectrum.

  • Blocks 100% of blue light up to 410 nm
  • Reduces it by 45% in the 410-450 nm range

That is a measurable, technical fact — the lens really does filter what it claims to. The question is different: what does that mean for your eyes?

What the research says — honestly

This is where many brands exaggerate. We don't want to.

In 2023, Cochrane — the most authoritative independent organization for evidence in medicine — published a review of 17 clinical trials. The conclusion was cautious:

Blue-light filtering lenses probably make no meaningful difference to eye strain from screen work, retinal health, or sleep quality.

In other words: the evidence that blue-cut lenses reduce eye fatigue is still weak. The studies were small-scale and short-term.

That doesn't mean the glasses "don't work" — it means science has not yet proven a medical effect. Many wearers do subjectively feel more comfortable, and that's real, even if studies can't measure it yet.

So what actually causes eye fatigue?

This is the most useful part. The real causes of screen fatigue are usually these:

  1. We don't blink often enough. At a screen, your blink rate roughly halves. The eye dries out — hence the burning, heaviness, and redness.
  2. Constant focusing strain. Staring at one distance for hours tires the eye muscles.
  3. Contrast and brightness. A bright screen in a dark room, or glare falling on the screen.
  4. Wrong distance and angle. A screen that's too close, or above eye level.
  5. Uncorrected vision. Often "screen fatigue" is actually a small prescription issue that has never been checked.

What really works

  • The 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at an object about 6 meters away for 20 seconds
  • Deliberate blinking — especially while reading
  • Match your screen brightness to the room lighting
  • Keep the screen 50-70 cm away, slightly below eye level
  • Visit an ophthalmologist once a year

Who blue light glasses make sense for

Our position is an honest one: blue light glasses are not a medical device. They make sense when:

You spend 6+ hours a day at a screen and want comfort. Many wearers say the slightly warmer tone feels more pleasant during long work sessions. That's subjective — but comfort is real value.

You need glasses anyway. If you wear prescription or reading glasses, a blue-cut filter is a free bonus — no downside, with potential upside.

You want the style. Honestly — many people buy them simply because they like them. That's a perfectly legitimate reason.

Who doesn't need them

If you spend 1-2 hours a day at a screen and feel no discomfort — blue light glasses won't solve your problem, because you don't have one.

How to choose blue light glasses

  1. Check the filtering specs. The brand should state a specific number and range (e.g. "100% up to 410 nm"). If it just says "blocks blue light" — that means nothing.
  2. Pay attention to the tint. A strong filter gives the lens a yellowish cast and distorts colors. For a designer or photographer, that's a problem.
  3. Frame weight. Eight hours a day in a heavy frame means pressure on your nose and temples. 15-20 grams is a comfortable limit.
  4. Size. A marking like 56-16-145 mm means lens width, bridge width, and temple length. Compare it to your current glasses.
  5. What's included. A case and a cleaning cloth significantly extend the life of the lenses.

Frequently asked questions

Do blue light glasses improve sleep?

According to the Cochrane review, there is no reliable evidence of this yet. For better sleep, switching screens off 1-2 hours before bed and darkening the room matter far more.

Can children wear them?

They do no harm. But for a child, limiting screen time and playing outdoors matter much more — outdoor play is also proven to help prevent myopia.

Do blue-cut lenses protect from the sun?

No. These are different functions. For UV protection you need sunglasses.

Can I get them with a prescription?

Yes, a blue-cut filter can be applied to prescription lenses too.

How soon will I feel a difference?

If you're going to feel one — usually within the first week. If nothing has changed after 2-3 weeks, the problem lies elsewhere: most likely in your work habits or uncorrected vision.

The bottom line

Blue light glasses filter blue light — that's a technical fact. But the claim that they cure eye fatigue has not yet been proven. We think it's more honest to put it this way: this is a comfort and style product, not a medicine.
