Laptop Bag Sizes: 13, 15 or 17 Inches — How to Choose
Written by MODI
In a hurry? The interactive size guide answers this in one tap — pick your laptop model and see exactly which size fits, with real clearances in centimetres.
The most common mistake when buying a laptop bag is getting the size wrong. Here are the simple rules:
1. Measure your screen diagonally
Laptop size is measured by the screen diagonal in inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). A MacBook Air is 13.6", a standard work laptop is 15.6", and gaming laptops are often 17.3".
2. Pick a bag in the matching size
- 13-14 inch bags — for the MacBook Air/Pro 13-14 and small ultrabooks.
- 15-16 inch bags — the most common size, fits most work laptops.
- 17 inch bags — for large-screen and gaming laptops.
3. What to look out for
- A protected compartment — a soft inner lining protects the laptop from knocks.
- Water-resistant material — your tech stays safe in the rain.
- A shoulder strap and a handle — two carrying options for comfort.
4. The 16-inch trap
A 16-inch MacBook Pro measures 35.57 × 24.81 cm. It is not the width that catches people out — a 15.6-inch Windows laptop is about the same at 35.9 cm. It is the depth: 24.81 cm against roughly 23.6 cm. That extra centimetre is why bags labelled "up to 15 inch" often will not take a 16-inch MacBook, which sits in the gap between the 15" and 17" labels most makers use. Bombata's 15-16 size is 43 × 33 cm externally and takes it with roughly 7 cm to spare.
One more thing worth knowing before you choose a finish: only two Bombata lines are made in 17 inch — Classic and All Black, 11 products in all. Everything else stops at 15-16. The full line-by-size table is here.
